Gran Canaria 365

Gran Canaria boosts its profile as a cycling destination with the ‘Gran Canaria 365’ initiative

The Maspalomas Lighthouse was the setting on Tuesday for the symbolic launch of the Gran Canaria 365 initiative, a strategic action aimed at strengthening the island’s profile as a top cycling destination year-round.

In the photo, around twenty cyclists from the international peloton, led by world champion Tadej Pogačar, joined institutional representatives and project promoters to mark the official start of the initiative. At the event, the President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, and the Tourism Councillor, Carlos Álamo, welcomed the athletes who will be cycling across the island over the coming days.

“The presence of Pogačar and other top-level cyclists on the island opens a great window for the world to see once again that Gran Canaria offers ideal conditions for sports throughout the year, thanks to its climate, infrastructure, and connectivity—all within the framework of an island model of sustainable development, a commitment to diversification, and a belief in the social transformation potential of sports values,” said Antonio Morales.

The Tourism Councillor of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, stated: “Gran Canaria is a multi-product destination that has added the appeal of year-round sports, something especially valued by cyclists. Having a legend like Pogačar, alongside two other current world champions, gives us a golden opportunity to showcase our island and its full potential to millions of cycling fans worldwide.”

Also present at the event were Nicolás Villalobos, President of Tri Bike & Run; Ramón Suárez, Sports Councillor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana; and Daniel González, Manager of DG Eventos.

From November 24 to 30, the cyclists will carry out training sessions at various locations across the island and participate in the TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves, to be held on November 30. In parallel, a press trip with international media will take place, further promoting Gran Canaria as a prime location for professional training and sports tourism.

The main media focus of the day was on Tadej Pogačar, world champion and four-time Tour de France winner, who chose Gran Canaria along with more than twenty other top athletes, attracted by the climate, terrain, and high-quality infrastructure the island offers for high-performance cycling.

Gran Canaria 365 is an initiative created by DG Eventos and promoted by Turismo de Gran Canaria through Gran Canaria Tri Bike & Run, aiming to establish a sustainable development model centered on sports, nature, and the island’s privileged climate.
